Piz Buin, Mountain peak in Silvretta range, Austria and Switzerland
Piz Buin is a 3,312-meter peak in the Silvretta range that forms the border between Austria's Vorarlberg region and Switzerland's Graubünden canton. The mountain has two summits of different heights that climbers aim to reach during their ascent.
The mountain was first climbed on July 14, 1865, when alpinists Joseph Anton Specht and Johann Jakob Weilenmann reached the summit with their guides. This early ascent marked the beginning of a long tradition of climbers pursuing the peak.
The name comes from the Romansh language, where 'Piz' means mountain and reflects the local heritage of the border region. Climbers from both countries have long viewed this peak as an important destination in their mountain exploration.
The climb requires crossing the Vermunt glacier from the Wiesbadener hut, followed by a traverse across the Ochsentaler glacier. Good weather and glacier experience are essential for a safe ascent to this high peak.
The mountain inspired Franz Greiter to create the Piz Buin sunscreen brand in 1938 after experiencing severe sunburn during his climb. This brand remains well known today and is used by people worldwide seeking sun protection.
