Barda, city in Azerbaijan
Barda is a city in Azerbaijan situated on the left bank of the Tartar river, south of Yevlax. The urban area is marked by a few surviving historical structures, including a four-minaret mosque and a fourteenth-century tomb decorated with turquoise tiles.
Barda was once the capital of the Kingdom of Albania and later a significant Islamic center in the province of Arran. The city experienced periods of prosperity but suffered destruction from Rus attacks in the tenth century and from earthquakes and Mongol invasions in later centuries.
Barda carries traces of its past as a capital of Albania and later as an Islamic center that shaped the region. Local people maintain traditional ways of life tied to agriculture and land stewardship.
The city sits near a cease-fire line established after 1994, located a few kilometers to the west. Visitors should be aware of the local situation and check current conditions before traveling.
In medieval times the city was known as Partav and had a marketplace that opened only on Sundays, called by various names including Keraki and al-Kurki. This selective trading schedule reflected the unique commercial importance of the place.
