Gulustan Fortress, Medieval fortress in Goranboy District, Azerbaijan
Gulustan Fortress is a medieval stronghold nestled in the foothills of Murovdag that commands views over the Incechay river valley below. The structure spreads across a natural ridge and is protected on three sides by steep rocky cliffs, with dense forest covering the northern edge.
The fortress emerged as a ruling center for an Armenian noble family that governed the surrounding principality from the 12th century through the 17th century. This long period of control transformed it into one of the major power seats of the medieval region.
This stronghold served as a seat of power for a regional noble family and reflects the architectural traditions of medieval Armenian military construction. Walking through the ruins today, you can sense the importance this place held for those who ruled from here.
Enter from the southeastern side where the main gateway is located, as the other approaches are blocked by natural cliffs and forest. Wear sturdy footwear since much of the site has uneven rocky ground and steep slopes.
A concealed passage descends from the fortress down to the river, providing defenders with a crucial water supply route that could not be cut off during attacks. This hidden feature demonstrates how carefully the location was chosen for both survival and defense.
