National Flag Square, Public square with a flagpole in Bayil district, Baku, Azerbaijan.
This public square in Baku extends along the Caspian Sea and features a large flagpole displaying Azerbaijan's national flag. The open space includes a museum with exhibitions about flags and military history, along with sculptures and monuments throughout the grounds.
This square was established by presidential decree in 2007, marking the introduction of National Flag Day, which Azerbaijan observes annually. Its creation reflected the desire to establish a place highlighting the country's national symbols.
The square displays bronze sculptures showing Azerbaijan's national symbols, including the coat of arms, hymn verses, and a detailed map of the country. These installations create a visual expression of national identity that visitors notice while walking through the space.
The grounds are easily reached via Neftchiler Avenue and offer plenty of open space for walking and exploring. You can visit the attached museum, and the site is best visited early in the day when fewer crowds are present.
The flagpole is made of nine conical steel segments stacked together to create an impressive structure. The national flag, when fully extended, weighs more than 500 kilograms, making it one of the heaviest flags in the world.
