Gasim bey Bath, Traditional bathhouse in Old City of Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Gasim bey Bath is a bathhouse with octagonal main halls surrounded by smaller chambers, each fitted with stone flooring. Ceramic tubes run through the walls and beneath the floors to distribute heat throughout the structure.
This bathhouse was built in the 17th century near the Salyan gates of the Icheri Sheher fortress and served travelers using the Silk Road trade routes. In 1970, the structure was modified and later repurposed as the Green Pharmacy while keeping its original architectural features.
The bathhouse served as a social gathering place where people spent time together beyond just bathing. The layout included dedicated spaces for changing, resting, and soaking in hot chambers, reflecting how bathing was woven into daily community life.
The structure is located in the Old City in a pedestrian area with narrow, winding streets and stone paving. It is best reached on foot, and visitors can easily explore the surrounding historic buildings and alleyways while in the area.
The bathhouse earned the nickname Sweet Bath because it served sweets and tea to visitors during their stay. This custom made it a beloved meeting spot where bathing and socializing went hand in hand.
