Shaki

Shaki is a city in northern Azerbaijan nestled on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains, where it developed as a trading hub. The old town centers on traditional houses, the Khan Palace, and bazaars that form the core of daily life and commerce.

People have settled in this location since ancient times when the area fell under various empire powers. A fortified city emerged in the 12th century and later grew as an important trade node under Persian rule.

The Palace of Shaki Khans displays ornate wooden lattice screens that reflect patterns found throughout the old town's architecture. This style of decoration appears in houses and bazaars, shaping how residents and visitors experience the historic quarters.

The town is compact and easily explored on foot, with main sights like the Khan Palace and bazaars within walking distance. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for walking through the old streets and market areas.

During the 1800s the town became a major center for silk production that drew merchants from across Europe. Many old trading buildings still stand today as reminders of when it served as an international production hub.
