Gadabay District

The district extends across the Lesser Caucasus mountains, encompassing northern parts of Shahdagh Mount and the Bashkend-Dastafur geographical formation at 1849 meters elevation.

The region contains settlements dating to the Khojaly-Gadabay culture from the 14th to 8th centuries BC, with copper mining operations starting in the 1850s.

The district maintains a population of 101,062 residents, with 99 percent being Azerbaijani citizens who preserve traditional mountain agricultural practices.

The area contains deposits of gold, uranium, and copper, while the Akhinja, Zayam, and Shamkir rivers provide water resources for local agriculture.

A copper smelting facility, established by local entrepreneurs in 1855 and later acquired by Siemens Brothers, marked the beginning of industrial development.
