Absheron National Park, National park on Absheron Peninsula, Azerbaijan.
Absheron National Park is a protected area at the southeastern tip of the peninsula with semi-arid steppe and sand dunes covered in salt-adapted plants. The landscape consists of sandy terrain and water features, dominated by vegetation specifically suited to harsh, dry conditions.
The site was first established as a nature reserve in 1969 to protect endangered gazelles and seals in the region. It gained national park status in 2005 when a presidential decree expanded and formalized its protection.
The park shows how people here work to protect and understand these rare habitats through education and observation. Visitors find signage and viewing points throughout the grounds that encourage close study of the surrounding nature.
The park sits roughly 60 kilometers from Baku and is easiest to reach by car. Guided tours are available on-site and help visitors find the best viewing spots and walking routes through the grounds.
The area serves as a vital stopover for roughly 50 bird species, including gulls, terns, and waders that pass through or nest here. Bird enthusiasts and nature watchers come specifically to observe these migratory birds in their natural setting.
