Boyuk Zira lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Boyuk Zira Island, Absheron District, Azerbaijan.
Boyuk Zira lighthouse is an octagonal structure with a white tower topped by a red lantern that stands 18 meters above the Caspian Sea. The design was built to project light across long distances over open water.
The original installation was built in 1884 and served for many years as a navigation station for ships heading into Baku Bay. Its role changed as other structures later took on similar functions.
The lighthouse reflects the maritime heritage of the Caspian region and carries names in multiple languages that show its historical importance to shipping. When you visit, you notice how central this structure is to local identity and connection to the sea.
The site can be windy and cool, especially when wind comes off the sea, so bring warm clothing when you visit. Watch for slippery surfaces around the structure, particularly if the weather is damp.
In 1912, this installation became the first in the Russian Empire to adopt acetylene lighting for maritime use. This technology was advanced for its time and made navigation safer than before.
