Monument to Alexander Pushkin, Bronze monument in Arts Square, Baku, Azerbaijan.
The Monument to Alexander Pushkin is a bronze figure about 10 feet (3 m) tall, standing at the corner of Pushkin Street and Uzeyir Hajibeyov Street, near Arts Square in Baku. The statue shows the poet in an upright pose and is set on a stone pedestal surrounded by a small open space.
The monument was unveiled on October 12, 2001, to mark the tenth anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence. It was one of the last works completed by Russian sculptor Yuri Orekhov, who died shortly after finishing it.
The monument stands at a busy crossroads in the city's arts and theater district, where passersby encounter it as part of their daily route. Placing a Russian poet in the heart of Baku reflects the long ties the city has maintained with Russian literature over the centuries.
The monument is in a walkable part of central Baku, close to Arts Square, and easy to reach on foot from several nearby streets. The surrounding area is flat and open, with no steps or barriers, so approaching it from any direction is straightforward.
The street where the monument stands is named after the poet himself, a tradition in Baku that predates the Soviet era. Pushkin never visited Baku, yet his works circulated widely in the city and shaped its literary life for generations.
