Monument to Shah Ismail Khatai, Bronze monument in Khatai district, Baku, Azerbaijan
Monument to Shah Ismail Khatai is a bronze sculpture at a main intersection in the Khatai district of Baku, depicting the figure in an upright stance. The sculpture features detailed bronze craftsmanship and is complemented by granite surfaces around its base.
The sculpture was created in 1993 by sculptors Ibrahim Zeynalov and Zakir Mehdiyev as a tribute to this dynasty founder's historical importance. In 2007, the work underwent extensive restoration, during which granite stone was added to enhance its appearance.
The district name Khatai comes from Shah Ismail I, the founder of the Safavid dynasty, showing the deep historical connection between this figure and Baku. Visitors gather here to acknowledge a significant personality from Persian and Caucasian history.
The monument stands near Khatai metro station and is easily reached by public transportation. The location sits at a major street intersection and is accessible on foot from several neighborhoods.
The entire monument was relocated to a newly created park in 2020 following the expansion of Yusif Safarov Street. This relocation represented a major repositioning of the entire structure to a more central location.
