Maiden Tower, Medieval fortress in Ismayilli District, Azerbaijan.
Maiden Tower is a stone fortress situated on a mountain peak with steep cliffs on the right bank of the Ah-oh River. The structure spans several hectares and comprises preserved towers, walls, and a terrace.
The fortress was built between the 7th and 12th centuries as part of a regional defense system. It was connected to nearby Javanshir Fortress through an underground tunnel network.
The fortress displays building techniques from medieval defense structures, with preserved towers, walls, and a terrace still visible today. These remains show how people of that era protected their settlements from attack.
The site is roughly 10 kilometers from Ismayilli town center and requires a hike of about 3 kilometers from the main road near Khanagi village. Since it sits within a nature reserve, check local access rules before visiting.
The fortress stands within a nature reserve surrounded by mountain forests of the Greater Caucasus, placing it between history and the natural landscape. This setting makes a visit more than just a historical exploration.
