Shah Sultan Hussein Mosque, Islamic mosque in Novkhany, Azerbaijan.
Shah Sultan Hussein Mosque is a religious building in the Absheron region with a central prayer hall supported by four pillars and topped by a dome. Rectangular side chambers flank the main space, extending the overall layout and creating a functional spatial arrangement.
The building was constructed in the 18th century as an expression of religious and architectural traditions of that time. During the Soviet era in the 1930s, it was closed due to anti-religious policies and later restored.
The building displays traditional craftsmanship passed down through generations in the Absheron region. The geometric patterns and use of local stone reflect construction methods that remain visible in how locals understand their architectural heritage.
The site is located in the Absheron District, about 30 kilometers southwest of Baku, and can be reached by public transportation heading to Novkhany village. Visitors should note that as a religious space, appropriate dress is expected and opening times may vary.
The walls were built from local limestone using lime mortar, providing the region with a stable and long-lasting building material. This construction method shows how craftsmen of the time used available materials to create structures that still stand today.
