Yerevan state Azerbaijan dramatic theater, State drama theater in Yerevan, Armenia

The Yerevan State Azerbaijan Dramatic Theater, named after Jafar Jabbarly, was founded in Yerevan in 1928 as the first theater of another people in Armenia. Its troupe has performed in Baku since 1989, after the theater was closed in 1988 during the Karabakh conflict. Its repertoire centered on Uzeyir Hajibeyov's musical comedies "Arshin mal alan" and "O olmasin, bu olsun".

The theater was founded in 1928 in Yerevan as the sole Azerbaijani dramatic venue in Armenia at that time. The institution relocated to Baku in 1989, where it resumed its theatrical activities.

The theater stages works by playwrights such as J. Jabbarly, A. Shirvanzade, and S. Vurgun, which form the foundation of regional theatrical traditions. These productions connect audiences with stories rooted in local identity and artistic heritage.

The company has performed in Baku since 1989, working from a studio at the Azerbaijan Drama Theater, and tours regions of Azerbaijan as well as Georgia and Dagestan. Check where a given production is staged before setting out, since the troupe has no venue of its own in Yerevan.

In April 1944 the company took its Othello to the All-Union Shakespeare Festival in Yerevan, held for the 380th anniversary of the playwright's birth. The production was one of the troupe's appearances outside its own Azerbaijani-language repertoire of musical comedies such as Arshin mal alan.
