Binagadi asphalt lake

The Binagadi tar pits form a cluster where natural asphalt seeps from the ground, covering an area of 1.5 hectares at 54-57 meters above sea level.

The site was discovered in 1938 by student Mastan-Zade during exploration of Absheron bitumens, leading to initial excavations by researcher Bogachev that same year.

The scientific value of Binagadi extends across the Caucasus region through its extensive collection of preserved Quaternary animal fossils from ancient times.

Located 7 kilometers north of Baku city center, the natural monument receives protection under Azerbaijan law through government decree number 167 from 1982.

The tar pits have preserved numerous cave lion remains and a horse skull dated between 96,000 and 120,000 years old.
