Tuzla Canton, Administrative division in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Tuzla Canton is an administrative region in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina with Tuzla as its capital city. The territory comprises 13 municipalities and forms an important population and economic center within the Federation.
The region was established in 1994 by the Washington Agreement and received its current borders in 1995 by the Dayton Agreement. These agreements followed the conflict of the 1990s and shaped the political structure that exists today.
The name comes from Ottoman Turkish and means salt mine, a heritage that still shapes how locals view their region. This connection to salt production has deeply influenced the identity and daily life of the people here.
The region is easily accessible through Tuzla International Airport, which provides direct connections. A well-developed road network connects all municipalities, making it simple to travel within the canton.
The Srebrenik Fortress from 1333 stands as one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the region. This castle demonstrates the military architecture of the medieval period and serves as a remarkable example of fortification design.
