Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Public maritime university in Bangladesh
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University is a public institution in Dhaka focused on maritime and ocean science education. The campus includes lecture halls, laboratories, computer facilities, a library, and student accommodations.
The university was established in 2013 through an act of parliament and was Bangladesh's first institution dedicated to maritime studies. It was the third maritime university in South Asia and the twelfth in the world.
The institution bears the name of national leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and reflects maritime importance to Bangladesh. Visitors notice the connection to seafaring in the architecture and blue colors that symbolize ships and the ocean.
The institution is located in Mirpur in northern Dhaka and provides student residential halls for accommodation. A new permanent campus is being developed in Hamidchar near Chittagong on the Karnaphuly riverbank.
The institution is planning to acquire an oceanographic research vessel to enable students and scientists to explore the sea. This vessel underscores the commitment to practical maritime research and economic use of Bangladesh's extensive sea areas.
