Bangladesh National Zoo, National zoo in Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh
The Bangladesh National Zoo is a zoological garden in Mirpur, a district of Dhaka in Bangladesh, presenting mammals, birds, and reptiles in separate areas. The grounds cover a large territory with paths leading through different zones with enclosures and aviaries.
The foundation took place in 1950 near the Dhaka High Court with a small collection of spotted deer, monkeys, and an elephant. The move to the current site in Mirpur happened in 1974, allowing for a considerable expansion of available space.
The name reflects its role as the country's main facility dedicated to displaying wildlife. School groups regularly visit to learn about different animal species and interact with staff who share knowledge about care routines.
The park tends to be quieter on weekdays than weekends, when families and school groups arrive more frequently. The paths go through shaded and open areas, so comfortable footwear is helpful for longer walks.
Two lakes on the grounds attract migratory birds during the winter months, providing rest stops along their routes. This natural addition to the permanent animal collection offers extra observation opportunities for visitors interested in bird species.
