National Zoo, Animal sanctuary in Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The National Zoo is an animal park in Mirpur, a district of Dhaka, spread across a large site that houses species from Asia, Africa and other continents. The grounds are divided into several zones with enclosures for mammals, birds, reptiles and aquatic animals, connected by pathways and green spaces.
The park opened in 1950 with a small collection of native animals at a different location in Dhaka. During the 1970s, the facility moved to Mirpur and expanded its collection to include animals from other regions.
The facility serves as a learning space where school groups explore biodiversity and natural habitats of different animal groups. Many visitors arrive on weekends with their children to see both local and exotic animals.
The site opens Monday through Saturday and is located in Mirpur, a northern district of Dhaka accessible by rickshaw or bus. Visitors should plan several hours for the walk and expect to cover ground on unpaved paths.
The facility runs research projects on threatened regional animal species and collaborates with universities. Some enclosures display royal Bengal tigers and Asian elephants, among the most recognized residents of the grounds.
