Dobruja, Historical region between the Black Sea and Danube River, Romania and Bulgaria

Dobruja is a historical region lying between the Black Sea coast and the Danube River, spanning parts of Romania and Bulgaria. The northern portion belongs to Romania and features low hills, while the southern section lies within Bulgaria and becomes flatter toward the interior.

Greek settlers founded trading cities along the coast in the 6th century BC and encountered local tribes already living inland. The territory shifted between Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman control over the centuries, before being divided between Romania and Bulgaria in the 19th century.

The name likely comes from a Turkish word describing the dry, stony soil that shaped farming and herding patterns for centuries. Orthodox churches stand near mosques and minarets left from Ottoman rule, many still in use by local communities.

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and the coast is less crowded. The northern section is easily reached by train or bus through Constanța, while the southern part connects through Varna.

The northern section contains the Danube Delta, a maze of channels, reeds, and shallow lakes that attracts pelicans and rare waterbirds. Some parts of the delta are reachable only by small boats and remain waterlogged all year.
