National Assembly of Bulgaria, Legislative assembly in central Sofia, Bulgaria
The National Assembly is the seat of Bulgaria's parliament in central Sofia. The building displays neoclassical architecture with white exterior walls, prominent columns, and a central portal forming the main entrance.
The parliament began operating in February 1879 after Bulgaria gained independence from Ottoman rule. The institution evolved into the central legislative body of the modern Bulgarian state.
The parliament building appears on the reverse side of Bulgarian twenty leva banknotes printed in 1999 and 2007. This representation underscores the central role the institution plays in the country's political life.
The chamber comprises 240 members who serve four-year terms and hold plenary sessions from Wednesday through Friday. Visitors can view the neoclassical facade from outside, located in the historic center of the capital.
Since 2023, members have convened temporarily in the former Communist Party headquarters while extensive renovations take place at the original seat. This relocation marks a particular moment in the institution's history.
