The fortress structure stands 586 meters above sea level on a hill surrounded by the waters of Studen Kladenets Reservoir.

During the Fourth Crusade in 1206, the fortress became the site where Henry of Flanders received his crown as the second emperor of the Latin Empire.

The fortress includes preserved sections of outer fortification walls, two entrance towers, and remains of buildings that showcase medieval Bulgarian military architecture.

Reaching the fortress requires a two-kilometer hike from the end of the vehicle road, followed by an hour-long climb along steep terrain.

The fortress covers over 50 decares of protected land and rises 400 meters above the reservoir, with vertical rock formations along its perimeter.
