Vishegrad Fortress

Vishegrad Fortress sits at 306 meters elevation on the right bank of the Arda River, next to a large reservoir in southern Bulgaria. The structure features two rectangular towers and a main entrance, occupying a compact area on this elevated location.

The fortress was originally built in the 4th century as a defensive structure made of stone and mud mortar. Archaeological digs in the 1970s uncovered walls and foundations that revealed its long occupation across different historical periods.

The site reveals pottery and metal tools left behind by people who lived here in medieval times. These objects show us how daily life looked for inhabitants of this remote mountain area.

The site is accessible by road from the nearby town of Kardzhali, making it easy to reach by car or on foot. Visitors should be prepared for the hillside terrain and bring adequate footwear for exploring the elevated ruins.

The fortress was once the seat of a regional governor and held administrative importance in medieval Bulgaria. This official role explains why such effort was made to build a fortified structure at this commanding position above the river.
