Kardzhali

Kardzhali is a province in southeastern Bulgaria that spreads across the Eastern Rhodope Mountains with deep river valleys and varied rock formations. It contains seven municipalities with Kardzhali city serving as the administrative center.

The province came under Bulgarian control during the First Balkan War in 1912 as the territory was incorporated into the country. It gained its current administrative structure in 1999.

Turkish and Bulgarian communities live throughout the region, and their traditions shape local festivals, music styles, and building designs. You can see these influences in village life and town centers.

The region is connected by regional roads and bus services that link the seven municipalities together. Roads can be narrow in rural areas, so plan travel time accordingly when moving between smaller towns.

The region has one of Bulgaria's lowest urban population rates, with most people living outside cities. This means that rural landscapes and village culture shape what you see across the province.
