Perperikon, Ancient city and archaeological site in Kardzhali Province, Bulgaria
Perperikon is an ancient city and archaeological site in Kardzhali Province, Bulgaria, rising on a rocky andesite hill. The complex includes passages, platforms, and chambers carved into the stone across multiple levels.
People settled here from the Neolithic period when simple dwellings were cut into the rock. By the first millennium BCE the site grew into a Thracian cult center before later becoming Roman and Byzantine.
This sanctuary served as an oracle site where advice was sought before decisions were made in ancient Thrace. Pilgrims and rulers came here seeking guidance on wars and alliances.
Access involves steep stairs and uneven paths, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared to climb. Shade is limited, so bring water and plan for sun protection during warm weather.
Archaeologists found tools for cutting and shaping the rocks here, showing how workers expanded the complex over generations. A natural cleft at the summit was used as an altar, with liquids poured into the stone.
