The Lower Lake, Glacial lake in Rila Mountains, Bulgaria
The Lower Lake is a glacial lake in the Rila Mountains, part of the Seven Rila Lakes system, situated at 2095 meters elevation. Its waters measure 11 meters in depth and display remarkable clarity.
The lake formed during the last ice age when glaciers carved out this alpine basin and shaped the surrounding rock. It belongs to a connected chain of water bodies all created through the same glacial process.
The lake draws visitors who come to experience the mountain landscape and spend time near its waters during the summer season. Photographers and hikers gather here to appreciate the natural beauty of the high peaks surrounding them.
Visitors can reach the lake via a chairlift from the parking area near road 6206, located about 90 kilometers from Sofia, with the ride taking around 25 minutes. This transport method leaves you rested for exploring the surrounding terrain on foot.
The water freezes solid from October through June, creating a clear seasonal rhythm that shapes when people can visit. Only during the brief warm months does the surface remain liquid enough for swimmers and extended stays.
