Cabyle, Archaeological site near Yambol, Bulgaria
Cabyle is an ancient city sprawling across 650 acres at the foot of Zaychi Peak, featuring preserved fortification walls, towers, and Roman military barracks. The remains reveal layers of different periods that developed one after another across this strategic location.
The city emerged around 2000 BCE and became a center of the Odrysian kingdom before Philip II of Macedon conquered it in 342 BCE during his Thracian campaigns. Afterward, the settlement remained militarily important under Roman control.
The site holds two early Christian basilicas from the 4th century that show how religious practices shifted in ancient Thrace. Walking through them, you can sense how new beliefs gradually replaced older traditions in this region.
The site can be explored with audio guides, and an information center displays 3D reconstructions of ancient structures. Comfortable shoes and ample time are needed to walk through the various areas and take in the full scope of the remains.
The sanctuary atop Zaychi Peak functions as an astronomy observation point where people gather annually during the summer solstice. This hilltop location allowed ancient inhabitants to track seasonal sky changes that held deep meaning in their daily lives.
