Markeli, Medieval fortress in Karnobat, Bulgaria.
The fortress stands on Hissar hill near the Mochuritsa River, featuring stone walls integrated with brick rows stretching 530 meters in length.
The stronghold changed control between Byzantine and Bulgarian forces, marking significant battles in 756 and 792 near the Balkan Mountains frontier.
Archaeological excavations revealed three religious buildings: a 6th-century medieval basilica, a 10th-century Bulgarian church, and an 11th-century Byzantine church.
The site contains a water supply system connecting to a nearby river, designed to maintain resources during extended military sieges.
Bronze coins from the 6th to 13th centuries, graffiti fragments, ceramic mosaics, and medieval bronze seals were discovered within the fortress walls.
