Уйов камик, Ancient Thracian menhir in Starosel, Bulgaria
Uiov Kamik is a standing stone carved from natural rock formations near Starosel, consisting of a solid monolithic structure. The sanctuary lies within a network of burial complexes that formed part of a broader religious center.
The sanctuary was built during the Hellenistic period when powerful Thracian rulers controlled the region. This era brought changes to local religious practices and how such sacred sites were constructed.
The sanctuary served as a ritual center where Thracian people performed ceremonies connecting earth and stone. The stone itself remains a focal point where ancient beliefs about sacred spaces are still evident.
Access is by a dirt path behind Starosel village, with a short walk through countryside required to reach the site. Spring and autumn are ideal visiting seasons when weather conditions are comfortable and paths are easy to navigate.
In the late 1900s, treasure hunters detonated explosives at the stone base, believing gold was hidden beneath. The damaged areas remain visible on the stone today, marking this tumultuous chapter in its history.
