Pleven Zoo, Zoo in Pleven, Bulgaria
Pleven Zoo is a zoo set inside Kaylaka Park in the city of Pleven, Bulgaria. It is home to around 150 animals from 23 species, ranging from bears and deer to monkeys, peacocks, and parrots.
The zoo in Pleven has been open for several decades and has grown over time by adding new species and improving its enclosures. Because it sits inside a protected natural area, expanding the grounds is restricted by law.
The zoo sits inside Kaylaka Park, which has shaded paths and benches, so it is easy to combine a visit with a walk through the surrounding green area. Going in the cooler morning hours tends to be a good time to see the animals at their most active.
Pleven Zoo is the only zoo in Bulgaria located inside a legally protected natural area, which gives it an unusual backdrop of rock formations and natural caves. The bears at the zoo actually live in some of these natural caves, carved directly into the rock.
