Античен културно - комуникационен комплекс Сердика

The Serdika Ancient Cultural and Communication Complex is a museum site located beneath central Sofia's Independence Square and Maria Luiza Boulevard, revealing Roman streets, buildings, and early Christian structures. The excavation shows what the city looked like during its Roman period, with remains of residential areas and public spaces visible under glass and in exhibition halls.

Serdika was an important Roman city from the 2nd to 6th centuries before being buried beneath Sofia's modern streets for centuries. Archaeological excavations began relatively recently and have systematically uncovered the remains of ancient neighborhoods, churches, and public buildings from this period.

The Largo zone serves as a gathering space where temporary exhibitions and cultural events bring locals and visitors together. The open design reflects how ancient plazas once functioned as the heart of civic life.

The Largo zone is freely accessible and open daily, while the exhibition area beneath Maria Luiza Boulevard offers views of deeper archaeological layers. Plan for at least one to two hours to explore the excavations at a comfortable pace and read the informational displays.

A preserved mosaic inscribed with the name Felix reveals that wealthy households once lived here and decorated their homes with fine craftsmanship. This personal detail offers insight into the tastes and status of the ancient residents.
