National Archaeological Institute with Museum, Archaeological museum in Sredec district, Sofia, Bulgaria.

The National Archaeological Institute with Museum is a repository of artifacts spanning from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages, housed within a 15th-century former mosque building. The exhibits are arranged across several halls, displaying the material culture of different ancient civilizations that inhabited the region.

The institution was founded in 1905 and brought together archaeological collections that were previously scattered across different parts of Sofia. The mosque building housing it dates to 1494 and reflects how the city preserved its cultural past across multiple periods.

The building itself was once a mosque and still carries traces of this past in its architecture and interior arrangement. Visitors can directly experience this transformation as they move through spaces where ancient treasures now rest alongside the original structures.

The museum is located at an easily accessible spot in the city center and is in good condition for visits, with multiple halls spread across different levels. Plan adequate time to walk through the exhibitions as the collections are extensive and warrant careful attention.

One of the most striking collections comprises gold masks and ornaments from ancient Thracia, displaying the craftsmanship skills of the region's ancient rulers. These objects give visitors direct insight into the luxury and power symbols that Thracian elites employed during their reign.
