Boyana Lake, Lake on the edge of Sofia, Bulgaria
Boyana Lake is a small natural lake at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, on the edge of the Boyana neighborhood in Sofia. The water is ringed by trees and rocks, and the site sits within a protected natural area where swimming is not permitted.
The Vitosha area, which includes this lake, was placed under protection in 1934, making it one of the earliest protected natural areas in the Balkans. The lake itself is a natural feature of the mountain, used for generations by Sofia's residents as a nearby outdoor destination.
The lake sits close to Boyana Church, one of Bulgaria's most visited medieval monuments, and many people combine both stops in a single outing. Along the shore, visitors tend to sit quietly on benches or logs, watching the water rather than passing through quickly.
The lake is reached on foot from nearby hiking trails and sits roughly an hour's walk from Boyana Church along a marked path. There are no shops or food options nearby, so bringing water and supplies is a good idea before setting out.
Near the lake there are natural springs where hikers regularly stop to refill their bottles with fresh water, a habit well known among locals. The lake water itself, however, is not suitable for drinking, even for animals.
