White Mountains, Mountain range in New Hampshire and Maine, United States
The White Mountains stretch for roughly 87 miles (140 km) through northern New Hampshire and western Maine, forming the highest range in the northeastern United States. The chain includes numerous peaks, deep valleys, and dense forests connected by a wide network of hiking trails.
The range was traversed by loggers and hunters in the early 19th century and became a summer destination from the 1850s onward. A 1911 act created the National Forest that now protects large forest areas across two states.
The Presidential Range features peaks named after early American presidents and draws hikers who aim to climb each one. The region has welcomed railway enthusiasts for over a century, who ride the cog railway to one of the highest points in the Northeast.
The region offers trails for hikers who can choose between short walks and multiday treks, along with several ski areas for the winter season. Early autumn brings colorful foliage, while summer provides warm days and cooler elevations.
The highest peak is known for extremely variable weather that can shift from sunshine to dense clouds and strong winds within minutes. The weather station at the summit has recorded some of the harshest conditions outside polar regions for decades.
