Tapestry Opera

Tapestry Opera is an opera company in Toronto that creates and stages contemporary works reflecting the experiences of diverse communities. The productions develop through collaborations with varied artists and organizations across the city.

The organization began in 1979 as a madrigal singing ensemble and gradually transformed into an established opera company. Over the years it has developed a significant body of operatic works.

The organization presents works that center stories from varied communities and traditions, with a focus on amplifying voices from Black and Indigenous artists. Visitors experience how different cultural perspectives shape the storytelling on stage.

Performances take place at various venues throughout Toronto, including industrial heritage sites and waterfront locations. A new performance space at 877 Yonge Street provides additional opportunities to see productions.

The company runs a program specifically supporting female and non-binary music directors and conductors in the opera field. This initiative creates opportunities for underrepresented voices to lead and develop their careers.
