Westmeath Provincial Park

Westmeath Provincial Park is a protected natural area in Renfrew County spanning 610 hectares along the Ottawa River. The landscape features sand dunes, wetland areas, a long sandy beach, and an active sandspit that shift with seasonal water flows.

The sand formations were created by the Ottawa River at the end of the last ice age, when glacial meltwater shaped the landscape. These deposits continue to evolve through natural water and wind processes.

The park houses 300 plant species and serves as a nature study area for ecological research on wetland plant communities and wildlife populations.

You can reach the park easily via County Road 21, with parking available near the entrance. Walking paths allow you to explore the dunes, wetlands, and beach areas at your own pace.

The park permits waterfowl hunting, a practice that distinguishes it from most other Ontario provincial parks. This special designation reflects its management approach toward wildlife and traditional hunting use.
