Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, Jewish cemetery in North End, Winnipeg, Canada.
Shaarey Zedek Cemetery is a Jewish burial ground in Winnipeg's North End, covering several acres with numerous headstones arranged in rows across the property. The grounds include two stone mausoleums built in the early and mid-twentieth century to honor community leaders.
The cemetery was established in 1894 when the local Jewish congregation moved from an older site that suffered from regular flooding. The two stone mausoleums were erected decades apart in the twentieth century to house respected rabbinical figures.
Two mausoleums from 1917 and 1947 contain the remains of prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Shmuel Abba Twersky and Rabbi Schulim Gruber.
The cemetery is open Sunday through Friday for visitors, with entry at one gate and exit at another to maintain proper traffic flow. Walking the grounds is straightforward, though visiting during daylight hours is recommended for safety and visibility.
A dedicated section opened in 2012 to allow families of mixed faith backgrounds to be buried together on the grounds. This area reflects how burial practices have evolved to meet the needs of modern interfaith families in the community.
