Churfirsten, Alpine group in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Churfirsten is an alpine group featuring seven limestone peaks that stretch from east to west across St. Gallen. The highest summit, Hinterrugg, reaches 2,306 meters (7,566 feet), while the eastern flank drops steeply toward Lake Walensee below.
The name Churfirsten derives from the bishopric of Chur and reflects the region's administrative past. Local tradition also links the seven peaks to connections with the prince-electors of the Holy Roman Empire.
The villages surrounding this range display traditional Swiss architecture with wooden houses that reflect mountain living and local building craftsmanship. This style shapes the landscape and shows how residents have adapted to steep terrain for generations.
Marked hiking trails connect the different peaks and accommodate hikers of varying abilities. The best time to visit is from May through October when snow has melted and trails are safe to walk.
The southern slope displays rock formations shaped by the Rhine Glacier during the last ice age. These glacial traces remain visible today and tell the region's story of ancient ice.
