Canton of Geneva

The Canton of Geneva occupies both sides of Lake Geneva and the Rhone River, encompassing 45 municipalities with a French-speaking population of over 500,000 residents.

The territory joined the Swiss Confederation in 1815 after the Congress of Vienna, marking a transition from French control to becoming Switzerland's 22nd canton.

Located at the crossroads of Europe, Geneva Canton houses numerous international organizations, including United Nations agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Residents in the canton must obtain mandatory health insurance within three months of arrival and register with local authorities for residence permits.

The Canton of Geneva maintains geographical separation from the rest of Switzerland, connected only through Lake Geneva and a narrow strip of land near Versoix.
