Oeschinen Lake, Alpine lake in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland
Oeschinen Lake is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Alps, surrounded by steep rock walls and green meadows. The water sits at about 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) elevation and is framed by untouched mountainous terrain.
The area gained recognition in 2007 as part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage site due to its geological and natural features. This designation protects the mountain landscape and highlights its scientific importance.
The restaurant by the water serves regional Swiss mountain dishes prepared using recipes passed down through generations. Visitors eat as locals have for decades, experiencing the dining customs of Alpine communities.
A cable car from nearby Kandersteg brings visitors up, followed by a short walk through Alpine meadows to reach the lake. The path is well-marked and passes traditional mountain shelters that offer refreshments.
In winter, the surface freezes solid, and hardy visitors head out to fish through the ice. They catch Arctic char and lake trout through holes, a tradition rare at other Alpine lakes.
