Grassen, Summit in Central Switzerland
Grassen is a summit in the Urner Alps standing at 2,946 meters where the borders of three Swiss cantons meet. The peak marks the exact junction point between Bern, Obwalden, and Uri, creating a significant geographical reference in the Central Alpine region.
The summit has served for centuries as a natural boundary marker between Swiss cantons and retained this role when cantonal borders were formalized during the early Swiss Confederation. The mountain was a long-established landmark for inhabitants of the surrounding Alpine valleys.
Local mountain guides maintain routes and shelters around Grassen, continuing the Swiss tradition of Alpine infrastructure management and mountaineering education.
Access is by the A2 motorway exit at Wassen, then following road 11 toward Sustenpass to the parking area at Sustenbrüggli. From there, a marked trail leads to the summit through varying terrain and elevation changes.
The Grassengrat mountain chain features distinct geological formations that allow climbers to experience both glacier travel and ridge walking in a single ascent.
