Chur, Capital city in Plessur Region, Switzerland
Chur serves as the administrative seat of Graubünden canton and sits at 593 meters elevation in eastern Switzerland. The settlement extends between mountain ranges, linking a protected core with newer residential districts.
During Roman rule, the settlement bore the name Curia Raetorum and functioned as an administrative hub for the region of Raetia. Continuous occupation stretches back over five millennia, making it the oldest permanently inhabited Swiss town.
The protected center shows narrow lanes lined with facades from different centuries, while small squares open between buildings. Residents and visitors share the same pathways through the core, where homes, shops and offices now sit side by side.
Regular train connections link the place to larger Swiss cities and nearby mountain resorts. Walking from the railway station takes just a few minutes to reach the historic core.
The place remains the only Swiss settlement where German, Romansh and Italian hold official status in daily administration. This multilingual character shows in street signs and public notices throughout the core.
