Piz da las Trais Linguas, Mountain summit at Stelvio Pass, Italy
Cima Garibaldi (Dreisprachenspitze, Piz da las Trais Linguas) is a 2,843 m summit in the Ortler Alps on the Italian-Swiss border, 250 m north of the Stilfser Joch. It is the last rise of the Chavalatsch ridge running south from the Rötlspitze. At the top stands the Rifugio Garibaldi, a few metres from border stone No. 1.
Before World War I, this peak was where the borders of Switzerland, Italy, and Austria-Hungary met in a single point. The territorial boundaries in this region shifted several times throughout the 20th century, shaping the landscape seen today.
The German and Romansh names mean "peak of the three languages", after the Italian-, German- and Romansh-speaking areas that meet here. The Italian name Cima Garibaldi was coined by Ettore Tolomei in the early 20th century and adopted during the Fascist Italianisation of South Tyrol.
The summit lies about 250 metres north of the Stilfser Joch pass road, and the walk up from the pass takes roughly ten minutes. The Rifugio Garibaldi stands on the summit itself, beside border stone No. 1 marking the Italian-Swiss border. The Italian slopes below the peak are protected within Stilfserjoch National Park.
The summit's Italian name, Cima Garibaldi, was coined by Ettore Tolomei in the early 20th century as part of the fascist-era Italianization of South Tyrol; the older German and Romansh names mean "peak of the three languages".
