Diavolezza, Mountain pass in Grisons, Switzerland.
Diavolezza is a mountain pass in the Rhaetian Alps, sitting between Munt Pers and Piz Trovat at around 2,978 meters (9,770 ft), in the canton of Grisons. The mountain station at the top includes a restaurant, a hotel, and direct access to ski runs and hiking trails.
The Diavolezza mountain station was developed in the early 20th century, as alpine winter tourism grew quickly in the Engadin valley. The cable car that carries visitors up today replaced the original foot approach and opened the pass to a wider public.
The name Diavolezza means "little she-devil" in Italian and refers to a legendary figure said to haunt the surrounding rocks. Visitors who walk the summit trail can find information panels that explain this local legend.
A gondola lift brings visitors from the valley to the mountain station in a few minutes, so no long climb is needed. The site is open both in winter for skiing and in summer for hiking, so the timing of your visit depends on which activity you prefer.
From the mountain station, one of the few high-alpine glacier walks in the Alps leads down to the Morteratsch Glacier and can be done without technical climbing gear. The route takes several hours and ends in the valley far below the starting point.
