Lai da Marmorera, Hydroelectric reservoir in Grisons, Switzerland
The Lai da Marmorera spans 2.6 kilometers in length and reaches depths of 65 meters within the Parc Ela nature park at 1,680 meters elevation.
The construction of Marmorera dam between 1950 and 1954 submerged the original village of Marmorera, leading to the relocation of 24 farming families.
The relocated villagers received a new church marked 'La Resistenza' as compensation for leaving their ancestral homes in the Romansh-speaking region.
The reservoir generates hydroelectric power for Zurich while offering water activities along the road leading to Julier Pass in the Swiss Alps.
The underwater remains of the original Marmorera village rest beneath the surface of this 1.41-square-kilometer artificial lake.
