Gross Ruchen, Alpine mountain peak in Uri, Switzerland
Gross Ruchen is a mountain peak in Uri that rises to 3,138 meters and displays steep north faces with the Ruchenfirn glacier covering its eastern slopes. The summit sits within the Urirotstock massif, a section of the central Swiss Alps known for its rocky composition and glaciated terrain.
Gross Ruchen formed over millions of years through tectonic forces and glacial erosion, becoming part of the Urirotstock massif within the central Alpine system. The glaciers on its eastern slopes are remnants of much larger ice sheets that covered the region during the last ice age.
Local mountaineers maintain traditional climbing routes on Gross Ruchen, passing their knowledge of safe passage through generations of Alpine communities.
Access to the summit requires experience with rock climbing and rope work, with marked approaches from nearby villages in the valley. The climbing season runs from July through September when weather conditions are most favorable and snow coverage is minimal.
The junction between Gross Ruchen and Gross Windgällen creates a natural amphitheater that channels wind patterns specific to this section of the Alps.
