Umbrail Pass, Mountain pass and border crossing at Santa Maria Valley, Switzerland
Umbrail Pass is a paved mountain road connecting Switzerland and Italy, reaching an elevation of 2,501 meters in the eastern Alps. The route crosses tight alpine terrain with steep slopes and descends from Santa Maria Valley toward South Tyrol.
The pass evolved over centuries as an important trade route connecting the Alps with valleys on both sides of the range. Modern road development in the 20th century transformed it into a main link between Switzerland and northern Italy.
Local people on both sides have used this route for centuries as a vital connection between regions. It links the Swiss customs of Müstair Valley with the Italian traditions of Valtellina, creating a meeting point for alpine cultures.
The road is normally closed from October to June due to snow blocking the passage. Vehicles over 18 tons are not permitted on this route, so drivers should check their vehicle size before attempting the ascent.
The northern side features numerous hairpin turns that challenge drivers navigating tight curves on the steep ascent. These sharp bends create a notably more intense driving experience compared to the gentler descent on the Italian side.
