Agassizhorn, Mountain summit in Bernese Alps, Switzerland
Agassizhorn is a mountain summit in the Bernese Alps that stands at 3,946 meters (12,960 feet) between three major glaciers. The peak sits surrounded by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, Unteraar Glacier, and Fiescher Glacier, creating a dramatic ice-covered landscape.
The peak was named after Louis Agassiz, a 19th century Swiss geologist who conducted major research on glacier movement and ice age periods. His work in this region significantly advanced the understanding of how glaciers form and change over time.
In 2007, a campaign called 'Démonter Agassiz' proposed renaming the peak to 'Pic Renty' due to Louis Agassiz's controversial racial theories.
Reaching this summit requires serious mountaineering experience and proper equipment, as weather at this elevation shifts rapidly and unpredictably throughout the day. Visitors should prepare for harsh conditions and only attempt the route when weather is stable.
The summit marks a continental divide where water flows either northward toward the North Sea or southward toward the Mediterranean. This geographic boundary line makes the location a special point with two opposing drainage directions.
