Schönbiel Hut, Mountain hut in Valais, Switzerland
Schönbiel Hut is a mountain refuge in the Swiss Alps located north of the Zmutt Glacier, several kilometers west of Zermatt. The building provides shelter and meals for mountaineers and sits surrounded by glaciers and alpine peaks.
The original shelter was built in 1909 to serve mountaineers at this remote location. The Swiss Alpine Club replaced it with a new structure in 1955 to accommodate more climbers.
The hut embodies Swiss alpine hospitality traditions and serves as a base for mountaineers attempting climbs of the Matterhorn via the Zmutt ridge route.
The location is reachable on foot from Zermatt via a marked trail that takes about four hours and follows the moraine above the Zmutt Glacier. The walk crosses alpine terrain with established paths, so mountain hiking experience and proper gear are needed.
The hut sits where two major glaciers meet and offers direct views of the Matterhorn's north face. From this vantage point, visitors can see the glacier landscape and the distinctive mountain peaks in full scope.
