Bonistock

Bonistock is a mountain summit in the Uri Alps that rises to approximately 2168 meters and offers access via several established hiking routes. The paths wind through varied terrain including alpine meadows, rocky sections, and exposed areas that change in character with the seasons.

Bonistock formed during Alpine mountain building around 65 million years ago when tectonic forces lifted the rock layers skyward. Subsequent glacial erosion then sculpted the peak into its current shape and created the distinctive valleys and ridges visible in the region today.

Local mountain guides maintain traditional trail knowledge of Bonistock, passing specific route information through generations of mountaineering families.

The ascent typically starts from Obere Frutt and requires average fitness and secure footing on varied ground. Sturdy hiking boots and weather protection are essential, as the summit can develop clouds and wind even when conditions below seem fair.

On clear days the summit offers sightlines to several notable neighboring peaks and a network of around 28 different mountain trails spreads throughout the region. This variety of routes makes Bonistock an important junction point in Obwalden's hiking trail system.
